Remote control in autonomous shipping: technical, managerial and regulatory issues
Depending on the degree of autonomy, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has classified Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS) into four levels. Operation from a Remote Control Center (RCC) is core to the second and third levels of autonomy. In the foreseeable future, MASS is likely to operate at the second and third levels of autonomy. Hence, this thematic issue in the Journal of Shipping and Trade emphasizes various aspects of RCC operations, including technical, operational, regulatory, safety, service, and security considerations, from multidisciplinary perspectives.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Degree of autonomy in RCC operation
- Design requirements and capabilities of RCC
- Roles and competencies of RCC operator Management and coordination in RCC
- Business models of RCC
- Services and products of RCC
- Regulatory issues in RCC operations
- Cybersecurity risk in RCC
